Why Does Fusion Fest Matter?
South Africa’s artisan and trade economy holds enormous potential, but no single organisation can unlock it alone. Building a supportive, well-functioning ecosystem takes shared effort, open collaboration, and aligned action.
Fusion Fest is a space to do just that. It is designed to help ecosystem builders, artisan entrepreneurs, and students come together to move ideas into action and strengthen the systems that support the sector.
About Fusion Fest
Fusion Fest is a first-of-its-kind convening for the trade entrepreneurial ecosystem. It spotlights the people, ideas, and collaborations driving change in South Africa’s artisan and trade economy. It is a platform for artisan entrepreneurs, student innovators, and ecosystem partners to connect, share insights, and build toward a more resilient future.
The convening is grounded in the findings of The State of the Artisan and Trade Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in South Africa, a report commissioned by Allan Gray Makers. It focuses on turning research into real-world action through bold conversations, tested models, and shared experiences that shape what comes next.

What does a thriving trade entrepreneurial ecosystem look like?
To build a stronger, more connected artisan economy, we first need to understand what is working and where the gaps are. That is why Allan Gray Makers commissioned a study using a global framework called the 10 Conditions of an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem developed by Prof. Erik Stam.
The research explored the lived experiences of artisan entrepreneurs, TVET institutions, and ecosystem partners to identify the conditions that support artisan businesses and highlight where further collaboration is needed.
This year, Fusion Fest will focus on five key conditions that emerged as especially urgent and full of opportunity for collective action:
Talent
A steady supply of skilled artisans, supported by access to relevant education and certification through TVET colleges, universities, and training centres.
Finance
Inclusive financial tools, credit, loans, and grants that are accessible to artisans at every stage. This includes solutions for those who are underserved or unbanked.
Culture
A mindset that values entrepreneurship, encourages aspiration, and recognises artisans as entrepreneurs with the potential to build sustainable businesses.
Networks
Support structures such as mentorship, incubation, acceleration, and peer networks that help artisans grow, collaborate, and access new opportunities.
Knowledge
Investment in innovation, product development, and the commercialisation of research that brings new value into the trades.
These five focus areas will guide the discussions, workshops, and showcases taking place at Fusion Fest 2025.
